"Discourage litigation. Persuade neighbors to compromise whenever you can. Point out how the nominal winner is often the real loser in fees, expenses, and waste of time. As a peacemaker, the lawyer has a superior opportunity of becoming a good man." -Abraham Lincoln This quote from Abraham Lincoln sets forth the principles which guide lawyers who emphasize the collaborative approach. Richard Mandell is basing his practice on these principles. He is an experienced mediator and collaborative lawyer and has trained others in these processes. He has received numerous awards for his efforts to help families with innovative alternatives to the adversarial process. Richard serves clients in Orange County and surrounding areas. Richard continued his work in alternative dispute resolution while serving as Support Magistrate for 19 years in family court. He is now in private practice concentrating on matrimonial and family law including divorce, child support, and child custody/parenting time. In his private practice Richard emphasizes a collaborative problem-solving approach. Richard believes that the adversarial process often exacerbates the conflict in divorces unnecessarily. He wants to assist couples who are divorcing to find cost-effective and creative legal solutions without court interventions. Because of his many years of experience in child support issues Richard does accept litigated cases in support court. However, he brings the problem-solving approach to these cases as well, while providing effective representation in the courtroom. In the event that litigation is necessary for issues other than child support, Richard's colleague with whom he shares offices, Barbara J. Strauss, is available to provide effective representation in the adversarial process. To arrange for an initial consultation, please contact our office.
